*I’m posting an old review that I wrote in 2008, of a story in a digest that I no longer own. I didn’t make note of anyone other than the writer back then; the info comes from Grand Comics Database.

**according to solicitations

A newly-transferred freshman named Paula is being shown around Riverdale High School by a girl named Marcia. Marcia thinks Paula will like it here; it’s a small school, and everyone here is friendly. Paula has seen Betty and Veronica together a lot and asks Marcia for information on them. Marcia gives Paula their names and says they’re best friends. Paula brings up that they’re competing in the Miss Riverdale Teen Talent Show. Marcia confirms it, calling Betty a “wonderful dancer” and Veronica a “terrific singer”. Paula asks if it’s difficult to compete against one’s best friend. Marcia says they compete constantly and still manage to remain friends. To illustrate, Veronica hears one of Betty’s jokes at that moment and tries to top it.

Last year, they ran against each other for class president. Veronica’s father paid for all of her posters. Betty won. Veronica wasn’t really mad, because she was later elected vice-president of the student council.

At the present time, Veronica confirms her joke was funnier.

Last Fall, Veronica was named Homecoming Queen; Betty was the runner-up.

Marcia continues that Betty and Veronica compete in the classroom for grades and in athletics; when it comes to making a fashion statement, the competition is really stiff. To illustrate, Betty thanks Veronica for teaching her a lot about fashion, and Veronica compliments Betty on her “fabulous” new outfit. Marcia is amazed at how competitive that they are for two close friends. Paula is amazed and asks how they can stay friends through all of that. As Archie meets up with Betty and Veronica, Marcia tells Paula that she has yet to tell her the most interesting part.

This is a cute story. Using two nobodies to exposit about Betty and Veronica is interesting.

The bubbles that appear to show events in the past are confusing. Are they actual glimpses of the past or just Marcia and Paula’s thoughts? It’s not clear.

To illustrate Veronica’s singing ability, Veronica is showing singing “Sugar, Sugar” on-stage at a The Archies concert. First, Veronica’s outfit is hideous. Second, while Veronica singing “Sugar, Sugar” is a bold move for the band and demonstrates they can be very modern, the song itself is lame. It’s one of those 1960s bubblegum pop songs (it actually originated on the old The Archie Show from Filmation and became a #1 hit, and Archie Comics has been referencing it ever since). I can’t imagine a crowd getting jazzed up over this.

Betty was allowed to ride with Veronica on the float in the homecoming parade. Is that normal, or did Veronica allow it?

To illustrate Betty and Veronica’s competitiveness in grades and athletics, only Betty is shown taking an exam (and looking hilariously bug-eyed while doing so), and only Veronica is shown playing tennis. The illustrations would have worked better with both girls in each picture.

The fashion competition would have been better illustrated by an actual competition, rather than Betty simply picking up fashion ideas from Veronica and Veronica being impressed by Betty’s use of them.

Overall, this is a fun story and a unique way to look at the main characters.
