*I’m posting an old review that I wrote in 2007, of a story in a digest that I no longer own. I didn’t make note of anyone other than the writer back then; the info comes from Grand Comics Database.

Maria, Frankie, Veronica, and Archie are in a hallway at school. Veronica is showing off a giant stuffed mouse that Archie won for her. According to Archie, it’s because it reminded him of her. Maria says that’s so sweet and asks Frankie for confirmation. Frankie is tuning his guitar and ignoring her. He apologizes. Maria demands to know why Frankie doesn’t do anything impulsive and romantic for her. He says he comes from “a long line of romantic latinos” and that they don’t get any more romantic than him. Maria disagrees, saying he puts her on the back burner because of his music. After a bit more arguing, Maria leaves.

The next morning, Maria discovers her yard is full of holes. Her dad goes to fill in the holes. The yard seems otherwise undamaged.

The next morning, the yard is full of holes again. Maria’s dad calls pest control. Later on, a trap is set.

That night, Maria hears a snap and runs outside with a baseball bat. Frankie’s right leg is caught in the trap. He’s holding a shovel. Frankie was trying to find a time capsule that he planted in her yard over five years ago. He finds it. It contains poems and letters stating his love for her. He figured some day, when they’re old, they’d dig it up, but he’d forgotten where he’d buried it. The time capsule also contains a heart-shaped picture of Frankie and Maria when they were little with the words: “To Maria, who I’ll love forever and ever”. Maria cries and hugs Frankie. Frankie says he had to dig in the dark, so Maria wouldn’t see him, and he’ll patch up her yard. Maria tells him to not give it another thought. Her parents come outside. Maria says “I think we’ve found our pest…and I don’t think we’re getting rid of him anytime soon!” This confuses her parents.

This is the other new story in this digest. It’s okay, even though I don’t particularly care for Frankie and Maria. However, the larger issue of Frankie paying more attention to his music than Maria isn’t resolved. I have a feeling that Frankie dug up the time capsule simply because Maria got mad at him.
